Mid-Huron Landfill Closure
The MHLF is a shared landfill managed by the Landfill 6 Board representing six different municipalities: Goderich, Municipality of Central Huron, Municipality of Huron East, Municipality of Bluewater, Township of Ashfield-Colburne-Wawanosh and the Township of Huron-Kinloss.
The Landfill 6 Board has been aware for the past few years that the MHLF was getting close to full and when it reached capacity the Ministry of the Environment would require that it be closed, monitored and maintained in accordance with the Ministry’s regulations and requirements. Once the landfill started to flirt with capacity – municipalities who contributed high volumes of material were forced to find alternatives for their waste disposal in advance of the MHLF’s inevitable closure. Once those major contributors engaged those optional services the volume of waste coming to the MHLF diminished and the revenue from tipping fees was no longer enough to make continued operation viable. As a result of Ministry regulations, capacity issues and economics - the Landfill 6 Board decided to close the MHLF as of June 30, 2018.
The Landfill 6 Board will continue to be responsible for maintaining the MHLF site which includes monitoring, perpetual care, closure and leachate disposal (50 yrs) and the operating costs will be paid by the six municipalities.
